The Five levels of Taqwa in Ramadan
Content

Introduction

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. Dear brothers and sisters, as we find ourselves in the blessed month of Ramadan, it is essential to reflect on the concept of Taqwa, or God-consciousness, which is the ultimate goal of fasting during this holy month. Allah says in the Quran, "O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous" Quran 2:183). In this talk, we will explore the levels of Taqwa and how we can strive to elevate our consciousness of Allah during Ramadan.

Understanding Taqwa

Taqwa is derived from the Arabic root word "waqaya," which means to protect oneself. It signifies a state of being where a person is constantly aware of Allah's presence and strives to avoid actions that displease Him. Taqwa encompasses both fear of Allah's punishment and hope for His mercy. It is a comprehensive concept that influences our thoughts, actions, and interactions with others.

The Levels of Taqwa

Taqwa can be understood in various levels, and during Ramadan, we have a unique opportunity to elevate our Taqwa through specific practices.

Level 1: Basic Taqwa (Awareness of Allah) At the foundational level, Taqwa involves being aware of Allah's existence and His commands. This awareness prompts us to fulfill our obligatory acts of worship, such as the five daily prayers and fasting during Ramadan. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Fear Allah wherever you are" Sunan Ibn Majah 2240 This level of Taqwa encourages us to perform our duties sincerely and consistently.

Taqwa of the Heart (Sincerity and Intention)

As we progress, the next level of Taqwa involves sincerity in our intentions. It is not enough to perform acts of worship; we must ensure that our hearts are aligned with our actions. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of intention when he said, "Actions are judged by intentions" Sahih al-Bukhari 1. During Ramadan, we should strive to purify our intentions, seeking Allah's pleasure in every act of worship, whether it be fasting, praying, or giving charity.

Taqwa in Actions (Avoiding Sin)

The third level of Taqwa is reflected in our actions. This involves actively avoiding sinful behavior and striving to adhere to the teachings of Islam. Ramadan serves as a training ground for this level of Taqwa, as we abstain from food, drink, and other permissible things during daylight hours. This practice teaches us self-control and discipline, enabling us to resist temptations and sinful inclinations. Allah says, "And do not follow the footsteps of Satan" Quran 2:168. By avoiding sin, we strengthen our Taqwa and draw closer to Allah.

Taqwa in Character (Good Conduct)

As we cultivate Taqwa, it should manifest in our character and interactions with others. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was known for his exemplary character, and he said, "The most beloved of Allah's servants to Him are those who have the best character" Sunan Abi Dawood 4799. During Ramadan, we should focus on embodying good manners, patience, and compassion towards others. This level of Taqwa encourages us to forgive those who have wronged us and to engage in acts of kindness and charity.

Taqwa of the Soul (Deep Connection with Allah)

The highest level of Taqwa is a profound connection with Allah, where one’s heart is filled with love and reverence for the Creator. This level is characterized by a constant remembrance of Allah (dhikr) and a desire to seek His pleasure in all aspects of life. The Quran states, "Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest" Quran 13:28. During Ramadan, we should strive to increase our acts of worship, such as reciting the Quran, making dua, and engaging in dhikr, to deepen our relationship with Allah.

Practical Steps to Elevate Taqwa in Ramadan

To elevate our Taqwa during this blessed month, we can take several practical steps:

  • Increase Quran Recitation: Set a goal to read and reflect on the Quran daily. The Quran is a source of guidance and a means to strengthen our Taqwa.

  • Engage in Dua: Make sincere supplications to Allah, asking for guidance and strength to maintain Taqwa in our lives.

  • Perform Extra Prayers: In addition to obligatory prayers, engage in voluntary prayers (Nawafil) and seek to perform Tahajjud, especially in the last third of the night.

  • Practice Gratitude: Reflect on the blessings in your life and express gratitude to Allah. This practice fosters a positive mindset and strengthens our connection with Him
