Ten Steps to Develop True Khushu‘ in Salah

Introduction

Khushu‘—a state of deep humility, focus, and reverence in prayer (salah)—is among the highest spiritual qualities a believer can attain. It reflects the heart’s submission to Allah and the serenity of a soul mindful of its Creator. Allah the Exalted specifically praises those who attain such humility:

“Certainly will the believers have succeeded: those who are humble in their prayer.” Quran 23:1-2

This paper explores ten practical and spiritual steps to develop true khushu‘ in salah, combining Quranic guidance, Prophetic teachings, and insights from classical scholars.

Step 1: Purify the Intention (Niyyah)

The foundation of all acts of worship is intention. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“Actions are judged by intentions, and every person will have what they intended.” Sahih al-Bukhari 1

Before beginning salah, a believer should consciously renew their intention—seeking Allah’s pleasure alone, not habit or outward form. This mindfulness transforms routine prayer into sincere devotion, making the heart present before the Lord.

Step 2: Understand the Magnitude of Standing Before Allah

True khushu‘ arises from recognizing Whom one is addressing. Imagine the awe of standing before a mighty ruler—then remember that you stand before the King of all kings, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. The Prophet ﷺ reminded:

“When one of you stands to pray, he is conversing with his Lord.” Sahih al-Bukhari 405

To cultivate this awareness, take a moment before prayer to reflect on the greatness of Allah (ta‘zeem) and the smallness of oneself. This mental preparation anchors humility in the heart.

Step 3: Perform Proper Wudu with Presence

A mindful wudu cleanses both body and soul. Allah says:

“Allah loves those who turn to Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves.” Quran 2:222

Rather than rushing through wudu, treat it as a moment of spiritual readiness. The Prophet ﷺ taught that sins fall away with every drop of water washed from the limbs. Entering salah in this purified state sets the stage for inner stillness.

Step 4: Eliminate Distractions and Face the Qiblah Calmly

External peace supports inner peace. Choose a quiet, clean space for prayer, free from noise or visual clutter. Turn off devices, adjust clothing comfortably, and ensure the environment reflects the dignity of worship. Ibn al-Qayyim wrote that outward stillness (sukun al-jawarih) nourishes inward serenity (sukun al-qalb).

When standing for salah, internalize that the qiblah unites the hearts of all believers—directing focus towards Allah alone.

Step 5: Recite with Comprehension and Reflection

Understanding the words of salah transforms it from repetition into deep communication. Ponder the meanings of Al-Fatihah, glorifications (tasbih), and supplications. Allah commands:

“Do they not ponder over the Qur’an, or are there locks upon their hearts?” Quran 47:24

Reflecting on the verses as you recite helps prevent heedlessness and invites the heart to feel the beauty of Allah’s words. Studying tafsir and learning Arabic meanings can greatly increase khushu‘.

Step 6: Slow the Rhythm of Prayer

Rushing through salah is a major obstacle to khushu‘. The Prophet ﷺ once saw a man praying quickly and said:

“Go back and pray, for you have not prayed.” Sahih al-Bukhari 757

Pray with deliberate pace: complete each position fully, pause in ruku‘ and sujud, and rise calmly. Such measured movements allow the mind to catch up with the body, cultivating presence and awe.

Step 7: Visualize Standing Before Allah in the Hereafter

Consider salah as a rehearsal for the Day of Judgment when every soul will stand before its Lord. Imam al-Ghazali advised: “When you stand to pray, imagine that you are standing before Allah on the Day of Resurrection.”
This reflection fills the heart with reverence and fear of accountability, turning salah into a profound reminder of the Hereafter.

Step 8: Guard the Heart from Worldly Thoughts

Shayṭan whispers most during salah to divert attention. The Prophet ﷺ said that Satan called “Khanzab” causes forgetfulness in prayer, and recommended seeking refuge in Allah and lightly spitting to the left three times Sahih al-Bukhari 3293. Practically, if your mind drifts, gently bring it back. Do not despair—khushu‘ grows through persistence. As scholars say, forcing the heart to return is itself an act of devotion.

Step 9: Deepen Connection during Sujood

The closest a servant can be to Allah is during sujood: “The servant is nearest to his Lord in prostration, so make much supplication.” Sahih Muslim 482n In this position of absolute humility, empty the heart of all else and whisper your needs sincerely. The posture of prostration—the forehead pressed to the ground—physically embodies submission and awakens spiritual intimacy.

Step 10: Maintain Khushu‘ Beyond Prayer

True khushu‘ extends beyond the prayer mat. The state of humility and mindfulness should permeate one’s daily life. The Prophet ﷺ’s companions were described as “Those who are humble with the believers, stern against the disbelievers.” Quran 5:54

When a believer carries serenity into speech, conduct, and interactions, it strengthens the heart’s consistency in salah. Constant remembrance (dhikr), supplication, and moral awareness help preserve this sacred state.

Conclusion

Developing khushu‘ is not a one-time achievement but a lifelong pursuit. It requires patience, self-discipline, and sincere yearning for nearness to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ used to supplicate:

“O Allah, make the coolness of my eyes in the prayer.” [Sunan an-Nasa’i 3940]

Such devotion exemplifies worship rooted in love and tranquility. By following these ten steps—refining intention, understanding meaning, controlling the mind, and immersing the heart—a believer moves toward that serene communion with Allah which transforms prayer into a source of peace, strength, and closeness to the Divine.
