Fasting the Six days of Shawwal: and its reward
By Sheikh Uthman Hadi
Introduction:
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. Dear brothers and sisters in Islam, today I would like to discuss a beautiful and rewarding practice that follows the blessed month of Ramadan: fasting the six days of Shawwal. This practice not only enhances our spiritual connection but also brings immense rewards from Allah (SWT).
The Significance of Shawwal:
Shawwal is the month that follows Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. After the intense spiritual journey of Ramadan, where we strive to purify our souls and draw closer to Allah, Shawwal offers us an opportunity to continue this journey. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized the importance of maintaining our good deeds after Ramadan, and fasting six days in Shawwal is a perfect way to do so.
Hadith on Fasting Six Days of Shawwal:
The virtues of fasting these six days are beautifully encapsulated in several Hadith. One such narration from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "He who observed the fast of Ramadan and then followed it with six (fasts) of Shawwal, it would be as if he fasted perpetually" [Sahih Muslim 1164a]. This Hadith highlights the immense reward of fasting these six days, equating it to a continuous act of worship.
Another Hadith from Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), mentions: "Whoever fasts six days after the Fitr will have completed the year, for whoever does a good deed will have the reward of ten like it" [Sunan Ibn Majah 1715]. This reinforces the idea that fasting these six days not only completes the reward of Ramadan but also multiplies our good deeds significantly.
The Spiritual Benefits:
Fasting the six days of Shawwal serves multiple spiritual benefits. Firstly, it helps us maintain the discipline and consciousness of Allah (Taqwa) that we cultivated during Ramadan. By continuing to fast, we reinforce our commitment to our faith and our desire to please Allah.
Secondly, it acts as a means of gratitude for the blessings we received during Ramadan. Fasting is a form of worship that brings us closer to Allah, and by engaging in this practice, we express our thankfulness for the strength and guidance we received during the holy month.
Flexibility in Fasting:
It is important to note that the six days of Shawwal do not have to be consecutive. The Prophet (ﷺ) did not specify that they must be fasted in a particular order, allowing us the flexibility to choose any six days within the month. This makes it easier for those who may have commitments or challenges in their daily lives.
Encouragement to Fast:
As we reflect on the rewards and benefits of fasting these six days, let us encourage one another to take part in this blessed practice. It is a simple yet profound way to continue our spiritual journey and earn the pleasure of Allah. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Whoever fasts Ramadan, then follows it with six days of Shawwal, it is as if he fasted for a lifetime" [Sunan Ibn Majah 1716]. This is a reminder of the mercy and generosity of Allah, who rewards us beyond our expectations.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, fasting the six days of Shawwal is a highly recommended Sunnah that brings immense rewards and spiritual benefits. It allows us to maintain the momentum of our worship after Ramadan and serves as a means of expressing gratitude to Allah for the blessings we have received. Let us strive to incorporate this practice into our lives and encourage our family and friends to do the same.
May Allah (SWT) grant us the ability to fast these six days, accept our good deeds, and forgive our shortcomings. Ameen.
Closing:
Thank you for your attention. May peace and blessings be upon you all. Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
